Do you have trouble falling asleep at night? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. As it turns out, insomnia is more common than you think—it affects more than 40 million Americans. One in four will also develop it every year. Not only does it cause daytime sleepiness, but it can also lead to lethargy, anxiety, mood swings, and irritability. As if that wan’t bad enough, it can also increase your risk of developing chronic diseases (eg. heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes).
Fortunately, there are ways to treat the condition. For one thing, there are medications that you can take that’ll make it easier for you to sleep. Lifestyle changes might also help. For example, it’s a good idea to avoid caffeine in the evening. The same goes for exercise—you want to hit the gym early in the day, not when it’s almost time to go to bed.
Benefits of Weighted Blankets
Do you know what else might help? A weighted blanket. They’re literally what they sound like—they’re blankets that are weighted down with pellets or beads. They work by providing pressure on the body, which aids in relaxation. As a result, it’s easier for you to fall and stay asleep at night.
For those who’re interested in the science behind it—these blankets increase serotonin in the brain, an important chemical that’s believed to regulate sleep. On top of that, they increase dopamine production. But wait there’s more—they also reduce cortisol in the body, a stress hormone that’s associated with frequent waking and light sleep.
Considering that, it’s not surprising to know that they’re as effective as they are!
Choosing a Weighted Blanket
Weighted blankets are similar to regular blankets in that they come in different sizes. Not just the measurements, but the filling as well—that is, some are heavier than others. If anything, that’s the main thing that you want to pay attention to when you’re picking one out. The last thing that you want is to get something too heavy. That’ll only make it harder for you to sleep!
As a general rule, you want to buy a weighted blanket that’s 10 percent of your body weight—that’s the sweet spot. For example, you’ll want to get a 15-lb blanket if you weigh 150 pounds. Obviously, there’s some wiggle room, but that’s what you want to aim for.
Note: Due to the risk of suffocation, weighted blankets should never be used on young children and toddlers. Whoever’s using it must be capable of removing it themselves.
Finding a Weighted Blanket
Weighted blankets have shot up in popularity over the past few years. In other words, you can find them easily in stores. They’re made by various brands—some more well-known than others. As a result, they can vary in material. For example, some are stuffed with glass beads whereas others use plastic pellets. At the end of the day, however, they’re designed for the same purpose—help you sleep.
Retailers-wise, there are a number of them that sell these products. First and foremost, you can get them on Amazon. If anything, they offer the most variety. After all, third-party brands can set up a store and sell on the site. Not a fan of online shopping? No problem! You can also find them in brick-and-mortar shops such as Walmart, Target, and Costco. They might just not have as many for you to choose from.
COMHO Weighted Blanket Review
On this page, we’ll be taking a look at the weighted blankets made by COHMO. Hopefully, by the end of it, you’ll be able to determine whether or not it’s a good fit for you.
Never heard of COMHO? I’m not surprised. After all, they’re not a huge company. For one thing, they don’t even have their own website! That doesn’t mean that their products aren’t good, though. It just means that they operate on a smaller scale compared to other brands. What do they sell besides weighted blankets? Cushions, throw covers, lounge chairs, pillows, and more. Where can you find them? On Amazon.
Going back to their weighted blankets, it would seem that they’re doing fairly well. In the three years that they’ve been selling on the site, they’ve earned more than 260 reviews, most of which are positive. Surely, that gives you some sort of idea as to what their products are like?
Size-wise, they offer three options. Their smallest blanket measures to be 41” x 60” and weigh 10 pounds. Their larger one measures to be 60” x 80” and is available as both 15 and 20-pound variations.
Their weighted blankets are made from 100% cotton. Not only does it feel soft to the touch, but the material is strong and durable as well. What’s more, is that it’s breathable—that is, it allows air to pass through. This means that you won’t become too warm while you’re using it. Other benefits include the fact that it’s hypoallergenic and easy to take care of. When it’s dirty, just throw it in the washer (granted, it might be a bit tricky given its weight).
As for the weight, it comes from nano-ceramic beads. Similar to glass beads, they’re tiny in size (think grains of sand), which makes it more comfortable for the body. That’s not all, they’re also resistant to bunching. Another thing to consider is bulkiness. Heavier than their plastic counterparts, you won’t need as many to achieve the same weight. In other words, you won’t feel as if you have “a bunch of bulk” on top of you when you’re using the blanket.
There’s just one drawback—tiny beads mean that there’s a higher chance that they’ll fall out. And they can. That’s why it’s so important to take proper care of your blanket so that you’ll minimize the chance of that happening (instead of putting it in the washing machine, wash the cover by hand).
Between the cotton and the ceramic beads are multiple layers of fabric, which makes it warmer and more durable. They also prevent dust from getting in.
One thing to note is that their weighted blankets do not come with a duvet cover. You’ll have to get one separately (they also sell them on Amazon). In terms of material, you get two options—you can either get one that’s made from Minky fabric or cotton. Obviously, the former would be softer but I could understand why some people might want to go for cotton, especially during the warmer months.
Pro-tip: Getting a duvet cover would make it easier for you to take care of the blanket. Instead of having to wash the entire thing, you can just wash and switch the cover.
For the price, the quality is very decent. If anything, it’s not that much different from the more expensive ones that you see. First off, let’s talk about the quilt-like pattern. As you can see in the image, the blanket consists of different compartments, which helps to keep the ceramic beads even and distributed. The stitching is also high quality—you can tell that they’re made to last.
Keep in mind, however, that washing will wear it down. As the fabric weakens, there’s also a chance that the beads will leak out. That’s why we recommend using it with a duvet cover. It’ll let you keep the blanket clean so that you won’t have to constantly put it in the wash. If you must wash the blanket, do it by hand—that will ensure that the fabric won’t tear.
Note: If by the off chance, you get a blanket with a quality issue, let the company know and they’ll offer you a full refund or replacement.
Pricing and Returns Policy
Their blankets are a good choice if you want to give weighted blankets a try but don’t want to fork over a ton of money. I mean, even their largest size is under $50! If anything, their prices are definitely on the competitive side. Currently, their 10-pound blanket (41” x 60”) and 15-pound blanket go for $59.99. As for the 20-pound, it’s listed for $41.99. It’s a little weird how the bigger one is cheaper, but that’s the way it is—at least at the time of this writing.
Remember, since this is Amazon, you also get free shipping. If you think about it, that’s definitely a good thing—it means that you won’t have to lug the item home with you (remember, it’s heavy!).
As with their weighted blankets, their duvet covers also come in two sizes—48” x 72” and 60” x 80”. The former goes for $19.99 whereas the latter goes for $29.99. It might seem like a lot on top of the blanket but trust me, it’s worth it. It’ll save you a lot of hassle not to mention that it’ll keep it cleaner.
The wonderful thing about Amazon is that you can return the product within 30 days if you’re not satisfied. Just send the blanket back to the company and they’ll give you your money back. Even if it’s past 30 days, you can contact their team and they’d be happy to help resolve your problem.
COMHO Weighted Blanket Overall Rating
COMHO has affordable weighted blankets that are available in three different weight options. While they don’t come with a duvet cover, you can easily buy one separately from their store. In terms of their quality, there’s nothing to complain about really. The cotton material is soft to the touch and the ceramic beads are tucked away safely inside the quilt-like compartments. The stitching is also high-quality so you won’t have to worry about potential tears. Just try to hand wash it whenever possible instead of putting it in the machine (assuming that you don’t have a duvet cover).
