Cooshi Weighted Blanket Review

Does it take you a while to fall asleep? Do you wake up throughout the night? If so, you might want to consider getting a weighted blanket. For those who don’t know, they are a type of therapeutic product that is designed to help with anxiety and sleep issues. Initially developed for the special needs community, these blankets have exploded in popularity over the past few years. For one thing, more and more people have come to realize their benefits.

Benefits of Using a Weighted Blanket

  • Provides Deep Pressure Touch Stimulation, which has a calming effect
  • Mimics the responses elicited by a hug; leads to an increase in oxytocin, a hormone that slows heart rate and lowers blood pressure
  • Reduces stress by lowering nervous system activity
  • Increases the production of melatonin, a chemical that regulates sleep
  • Promotes the release of serotonin—a neurotransmitter that makes us feel happy

What are Weighted Blankets Filled With?

While it differs from blanket to blanket, most weigh anywhere from 15 to 25 pounds. Wondering what they’re stuffed with? The answer is—it depends. For the most parts, they are filled with glass beads or plastic pellets (think Beanie Babies), both of which help to weigh down the material. Ultimately, it is thanks to this pressure that the body is able to go into a relaxed state.

Who Should Not Use a Weighted Blanket?

Despite being beneficial for sleep and anxiety, weighted blankets are not suitable for all people. To be more specific, they are not appropriate for individuals with certain health conditions. For instance, they should not be used by people with breathing disorders such as sleep apnea or asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, or circulation problems.

Never use weighted blankets with infants under the age of two as they are not capable of taking it off themselves. As you can imagine, the results can easily be fatal.

Protip: When in doubt, consult a healthcare professional. You can never be too careful after all!

How Heavy Should a Weighted Blanket Be?

The formula that is commonly recommended for children and teens is 10% of the body weight a couple of pounds. For instance, a child that weighs 80 pounds would use a blanket that is 10 pounds.

It’s important to note, however, that this formula does not work too well on adults. If you do the math, you’ll realize that you’d end up with something quite heavy. For this reason, it might be a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional first before making a purchase.

Note: If it’s your first time using a weighted blanket, you might want to start off with something a little lighter as you probably won’t be used to all of the weight. Even so, it might take you a couple of days to get used to the feeling.

On this page, we will be taking a look at a certain brand of weighted blankets—more specifically, the ones by Cooshi. How soft is the material? Does it hold up well in the wash? These are some of the things that we’ll be examining below.

About Cooshi

Based in Savannah, Georgia, Cooshi is a small family-owned company that is run by a father and daughter duo. Aside from weighted blankets (they have two kinds—15 pounds and 20 pounds), they also sell regular blankets—a grey pinky dot cover, and a grey quilted cover, both of which are listed for under $60. While they do have an official website, their products are currently only available for purchase on Amazon.

As far as we can tell, the brand has grown significantly over the past few years. Even on Amazon, their products have consistently received positive reviews from customers.

Blanket Materials

The Cooshi Weighted Blanket, which is made out of 100% pure cotton, features a durable inner layer that is machine washable. As far as the inside goes, it is filled with a proprietary blend of glass beads that offers an even feel. As a matter of fact, the beads are sewn directly into the blanket—this helps to provide an even weight. On top of that, it creates the perfect warm hug sensation that leads to getting a better night’s sleep.

Not only is it great for the bed, but its softness makes it an excellent choice for the sofa. Whether you’re watching TV or reading your favorite book, you’ll be able to relax better with the blanket.

Build Quality

Don’t be fooled by the low price point, the Cooshi Weighted Blanket is well made. Upon taking it out of the packaging, you’ll notice that it is soft and cozy. Due to the fact that the beads are sewn into the material, they also won’t be shifting around. In fact, the blanket will “mold” to your body, which provides quick comfort. In addition to helping with your sleep, the blanket will be enough to keep you warm—even through the cold winter.

Whether or not you’ve used a weighted blanket before, the product will help tremendously with your sleep quality. The only thing that’s worth mentioning is that it does not come with a duvet cover. Fortunately, they do sell an ultra soft one separately.

As mentioned earlier, the weighted blanket is machine washable. With that said, it’s best to hand wash whenever possible as the material can wear out over time. Of course, using a duvet cover will also make things easier. If necessary, you can spot clean the blanket with a suitable cleaner.

Note: As per the description, the product is smaller than a standard queen blanket.

Pricing and Returns Policy

If you’re looking for an affordable weighted blanket, this is it. Currently on Amazon, the 15-pound version is listed for $85.95. For those of you who want something a little heavier, the 20-pound blanket is only a few dollars more at $89.95. Compared to some of the other products out there, theirs are definitely on the cheap side! What’s more is that they also offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If at any time you change your mind about the product, just contact them through the site and they’ll be happy to work things out with you.

Note: When you buy one of their weighted blankets, you can get 10% off of their soft duvet covers by using the code “Cooshi10.”

Interested in getting one of their products for free? If so, be sure to check out their Facebook page—they give away free blankets all the time! Not only that, but they offer their fans exclusive coupons.

Seeing as how their blankets are sold on Amazon, you can rest assured knowing that there’s a good return policy in place. If you end up deciding that the product is not for you, you can easily get a full refund. All you have to do is send the item back to the seller via Amazon. Once they receive the blanket, they will give you back your money.

Cooshi Weighted Blanket Overall Rating

The Cooshi Weighted Blanket is a great choice if you’re looking to improve your sleep quality. Despite its low price point, the quality is relatively high. Not only is the cotton material soft and cozy, but the beads are sewn directly into the blanket, which prevents them from shifting around when you’re sleeping. As with most of these products, however, they can only be washed a certain number of times before they start to come apart. For this reason, you might want to invest in their soft duvet cover. Luckily, you can get them for a deal when you purchase one of the blankets.

Our Take
The Cooshi Weighted Blanket is great in that it is cheap and affordable—this makes it perfect for those who are wanting to give weighted blankets a try. Available in two different “sizes”, they are made out of 100% pure cotton, which is both soft and cozy. With it, you’ll not only get a good night’s sleep, but you’ll stay warm throughout the night! The only “downside” is that it does not come with a duvet cover; you will have to purchase that separately. Even without it though, the material is machine washable, which is nice.
