FWY Weighted Blanket for Children Review

It’s not often I get a child’s weighted blanket to check out, but I am always glad to see them. Weighted blankets were made for children originally, and it is good that some firms are still focusing on that market. There are a number of key features that we need to look for in a children’s weighted blanket, the cover material becomes way more important, and getting the wrong weight here can actually be dangerous, as opposed to simply ineffective. The core of the FWY is actually pretty good. A fine array of materials used, and they seem to have hit the nail on the head with regards to the outer material. There are a number of caveats though, but first, we need to figure out if a weighted blanket is right for you.

Why Should I Buy a Weighted Blanket?

There are so many reasons to buy a weighted blanket these days. I have been using one for the last few months, and have never slept better. When I first read up on them I did not believe half of what I read. There are so many claims made, that weighted blankets help you sleep, make you less angry, cure insomnia, depression, and anxiety, and while not all of that is entirely true, most of it seems to be. Early studies on weighted blankets and clothing focused on the effects on children, and they found that using weighted items helps those with attention disorders or those on the Autistic Spectrum. In the years since studies have moved onto the effects on adults. I have found about a dozen studies, all showing the same thing, that weighted blankets relieve the symptoms of anxiety and depression. That they can help some people with insomnia fall asleep and even mitigate stress-related anger. It is all due to Deep touch pressure, or the hug effect, the release of serotonin and melatonin when pressure is applied to the body, and this works on everyone. So if you are suffering, or simply want a better nights sleep, then a weighted blanket is for you.

FWY Weighted Blanket Build Quality & Materials

It surprises me that most weight blankets don’t have a removable cover. Seem like a no-brainer to me. They are easy to clean and dry a lot faster. The FWY weighted blanket for children does come with a removable blanket, and a damn fine one too. The outer material is a poly blend, and normally I would prefer cotton, but the use of poly here makes perfect sense. Poly blends are easier to clean, and the use of a mink finish here allows the weighted blanket to double as a sensory blanket. Sensory blankets are perfect for children on the autistic spectrum or those with attention disorders. The look of the build is very basic. When buying for certain kinds of children perhaps something a little flashier might be in order, a there are a wide variety of options online, but it should be fine for most kids. Honestly, I would have liked to see even one alternative color.

On the inside, we have pure 100% cotton. Cotton is the best, landing dead center between comfort, porousness, and durability. The weight is added via poly pellets in this build, and while they are not my favorite weight solution, there are some unique benefits. They are hypoallergenic for a start, and they can be machine washed and dried. So long as you keep it on a low heat at the very least. Always something to consider when buying a blanket for a child, the need to wash it at a moments notice,  and have it ready again for the night. There is only one weight option available here, 5Lbs, which is good for a child between 40lbs and 60lsb, give or take. FWY do not offer any heavier builds, so when you need to upgrade you are going to have to go elsewhere. Bear in mind a properly fitted weighted blanket should be around 10% of your child’s body weight, give or take 2.5%, and fit flush with the bed, no overspill. This blanket is 36″ x 48″. be sure to measure your child’s bed before purchasing.

FWY Weighted Blanket Overall Review

Overall there is a lot to like here. The out material is fantastic and caters to all sects of the children market. The removable cover makes it easy to clean, and the use of plastic poly pellets on the inside makes that easy to clean do,l should the need arise. The lack of options is always a bad thing, but seeing as that is known, recommending this options becomes all the easier. But how much does it cost?

FWY Weighted Blanket Pricing & Returns Policy

Only the one blanket, much easier to break down the price. The FWY build is $89.99. I have looked at dozens of children’s weight blankets and tested out a small handful myself. The price here is excellent, well within the norm of this size and weight ratio. There are a few options out there that are cheaper though, but most of them do not use a mink-like poly blend for the outer layer.

The warranty is exactly like all the others. So not all that amazing. You are covered for one year, and it is limited coverage. This means factory faults only. I advise you pour over your purchase with a fine-toothed comb, make sure it is mint when you buy it. Worst case scenario you do have Amazon’s customer support to fall back on. FWY are an Amazon FBA, and that means a certain level of peace of mind when purchasing.

FWY Weighted Blanket – Is it Worth it in 2018?

Tough to say. I can certainly see a market for this build, but there are a number of other options out there right now that come with a little more peace of mind. FWY sell only the one model, and it is for children only. I know of two other firms that sell only to children, but they offer a full range of weights, running from the base 5lbs to 12lbs. I like the core of this one, and the price is pretty great, but the lack of trust might be an issue for some. If you are in the market for the first time weighted blanket for your child, and they happen to fall into the right weight range of the FWY weighted blanket to be effective, then I say go for it. You can always go for an established name when they inevitably size out of it.

Our Take
The FWY weighted blanket is made for children but from the same quality materials you'd expect to see in an adult blanket. The price is slightly higher than similar competitors but some of the features may be attractive to customers.
