Ourea Weighted Blanket Review

Weighted blankets were initially developed as a coping device for those with special needs. For instance, they were used by occupational therapists for those with autism and anxiety. They are also a great option for those with sensory processing disorders—something that affects both children and adults. In recent years, however, they have become more mainstream due to their ability to improve sleep and relieve stress.

How do they work? They work by providing deep touch pressure stimulation, a type of sensory input that has both calming and soothing effects on the body. Filled with glass beads, plastic pellets, or weighted discs, these blankets typically weigh anywhere from 10 pounds to 25 pounds.

How Heavy Should My Weighted Blanket Be?

Typically, a weighted blanket should be around 10 percent of an individual’s body weight. You don’t want it to crush you after all! With this formula, an 11-pound blanket would be suitable for someone who weighs 110 pounds. Of course, there’s a little bit of wiggle room as well. If you want something a little heavier, you could always add an additional pound or two.

Note: Never leave a small child unattended with a weighted blanket. Always make sure that they’re able to push it off of their body if needed.

What Should You Look For in a Weighted Blanket?

When it comes to weighted blankets, you want to consider the type of material that is used. After all, you want something that is going to be comfortable for you. For instance, some might prefer ones that are made out of cotton while others enjoy the soft feeling of a dotted minky fabric.

Another thing to consider is whether or not the blanket is machine washable. Since they vary in material and filling, you’ll want to double check what their cleaning needs are.

Benefits of Weighted Blankets

Weighted blankets do more than just improve sleep. Let’s take a look at some of their other benefits.

  • May help to ease symptoms of ADHD
  • Triggers the release of oxytocin by simulating a hug
  • Increases the secretion of serotonin, a chemical that regulates mood
  • Improves sleep cycle by increasing melatonin production
  • Helps you to stay asleep during the night
  • Pressure can help with Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Triggers the release of the “feel happy” hormone, dopamine

Possible Safety Concerns

While they are beneficial in many ways, there are a few things that you should keep in mind about weighted blankets. For one thing, they should never be used on someone with respiratory disease as the excess weight can make it harder for them to breathe.

Other considerations:

  • Do not use them with infants under the age of two as it poses a suffocation risk
  • Never wrap a child with a weighted blanket—they should merely be put on the top
  • Many consider a body weight of 20 pounds to be the minimum requirement for using these blankets
  • Avoid using these products if you have claustrophobia
  • Consult a healthcare professional if you ever have questions on the product

Note: When using it for the first time, it might be a good idea to “try out” the blanket for a little while before falling asleep. That way, you’ll know for sure whether or not it works for you.

On this page, we will be taking a look at the Ourea Weighted Blanket. What is it weighted down with? How soft is the outer material? Can you put it in the laundry? We’ll be answering these questions and more in our review below.

About Ourea

Ourea sells a variety of weighted blankets online. Judging by the positive reviews that they’ve accumulated, most people seem to be satisfied with their products. Like some of the other brands out there, however, they do not have an official website. Instead, their blankets are sold solely through Amazon.

For those who are curious, they sell the following sizes:

  • 48 x 78″ – 8 pounds
  • 48 x 78″ – 10 pounds
  • 48 x 78″ – 12 pounds
  • 48 x 78″ – 15 pounds
  • 60 x 80″ – 15 pounds
  • 60 x 80″ – 20 pounds
  • 60 x 80″ – 28 pounds

As you can see, they sell two different sizes, both of which are available in different weights.

Blanket Materials

The Ourea Weighted Blanket is made out of organic cotton from the Xin Jiang province. In terms of the inside, it is filled with non-toxic glass beads. To prevent leakage, the product features a unique 7-layer system; that is, it is made with two additional layers of cotton on top of the 5-layer base. Complete with small inner pockets, you can rest assured knowing that the beads will stay evenly distributed.

Note: Another great thing about the product is that it comes in many different colors. For instance, there’s grey, purple, blue, pink, beige, green, and orange.

Build Quality

Despite the low price, the blanket is made nicely. Material-wise, the cotton is very soft; it is also sewn in grids, which prevents the glass beads from going to the ends and corners, which is nice. While it might take some getting used to at the beginning, you’ll find that the weight will help with your sleep. As you can expect from a cotton blanket, it’ll also keep you warm.

Depending on where you live, though, the blanket might be too much to use in the summer. While the cotton material is breathable, it retains quite a bit of heat. For those cold winter days, however, it provides just the right amount of warmth and coziness.

Another thing that people have noted is that the blanket does not come with any kind of instructions. Unfortunately, this means that you’ll have to do some poking around for the washing instructions.

Pricing and Returns Policy

For what you get, the price is very decent. Currently, the 15-pound version sells for $95.80 on Amazon, which is on the low side for a weighted blanket that size. For those who are interested in something heavier, the 20-pound version is actually on sale at the time of this writing for $109.80 (down from $139.00). To sweeten the deal, there is even a $6 coupon that you can use at checkout. As you can expect from Amazon, the blankets will be eligible for free two-day shipping (even if you’re not a Prime member!).

Unfortunately, it looks like their other sizes (8 pounds, 10 pounds, 12 pounds, 15 pounds, 28 pounds) are currently out of stock.

Have second thoughts about the blanket? Don’t worry—Ourea does offer returns. As a matter of fact, they are so confident in the quality of their products that they will refund your money, no questions asked! All you have to do is ship the item back to Amazon with the return label, easy! Many people have done so with no problems on the site.

Ourea Weighted Blanket Overall Rating

The Ourea Weighted Blanket is a great value. Not only is it cheaper than many of the other brands out there, but its quality is nothing to scoff at. For one thing, the cotton material is sewn in grids, which prevents the glass-beads from shifting and moving around inside. Another thing that sets it apart from the rest is the fact that it comes in several different colors. There’s just one “downside” to the blanket—it is a little bit on the thick side; that is, it might be a too warm to use during the hotter months. For those cold winter days, though, the warmth is just perfect. Seeing as how they offer hassle-free returns, why not try it out and see if it works for you?

Our Take
Wanting to improve your sleep? The Ourea Weighted Blanket is a great place to start. Highly affordable, it comes in several different colors and sizes including a 10-pound version, 25-pound version, and a 28-pound version. Made out of a soft cotton, the blanket is filled with high quality glass beads that are kept in place by sewn grids—you won’t have to worry about it bunching all to the end while you sleep. The only thing to keep in mind about this blanket is that it can be a little on the warm side. Depending on how hot it is where you live, you might have to save it for the winter months.
