Pine & River Weighted Blanket Review

Do you have trouble sleeping? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. To give you a better idea, 25 percent of Americans experience insomnia each year. Fortunately, however, there are ways that you can improve your sleep. For example, you can take a melatonin supplement. It also helps to avoid irregular naps during the day.

You know what else can help? Weighted blankets. Surely, you’ve heard of them before? If anything, their popularity has risen considerably over the past couple of years. As implied by their name, they’re literally heavy blankets. Now you might be wondering, “is that really going to help?” The answer is yes. Studies have shown that they can help you sleep better. How? By providing warm gentle pressure on your body. Ultimately, it’s this pressure that promotes more restful sleep.

The Science Behind Using a Weighted Blanket

The gentle pressure from the blanket helps to increase serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates happiness and mood. That’s not the only thing that it does either—it also has a calming effect on sleep. The hug-like feeling also promotes the release of oxytocin, a chemical that helps you feel more relaxed. Because of this, weighted blankets are also an option for those with sensory processing disorders.

What Conditions Can Weighted Blankets Help With?

Weighted blankets can help treat the symptoms of sensory processing disorders. In fact, they’re often recommended by therapists. One of the reasons why they work is because they allow the individual to control exactly how much touch they’d like to experience; they don’t have to feel overwhelmed with too much pressure at once.

Deep touch pressure therapy can also benefit those with other conditions such as anxiety, fibromyalgia, and restless leg syndrome. Not only that, but it can have great benefits for those with ADHD.

How to Choose a Weighted Blanket

Choosing a weighted blanket is not as simple as just picking one off the shelf. You want to make sure that you get one that’s appropriate for your weight. More specifically, you want a blanket that’s around 10% of your body weight—that seems to be the sweet spot. It’s fine to go over by a couple of pounds but you wouldn’t want anything more than that as it can have the opposite effect on your sleep.

For example, a 10-pound weighted blanket would be suitable for those who weigh ~100 pounds.

Different Types of Fillings

All weighted blankets are essentially the same in that they’re heavy blankets. Ultimately, the difference lies in what they’re filled with. Generally speaking, there are two options—glass beads and plastic pellets. Obviously, they both have their pros and cons.

Let’s talk about glass beads first. Environmentally-friendly, they come in various sizes that all have the same effect. Just keep in mind one thing—the larger they are, the higher the chance that they’ll form lumps in the blanket.

As for plastic pellets, they’re generally more flexible. At the same time, however, they may feel uneven, especially for those who’re sensory sensitive. They remain a popular option, however, due to the fact that they’re cost-effective.

Pine & River Weighted Blanket Review

Pine & River has been selling weighted blankets since 2018. A relatively new brand, they offer an assortment of styles and sizes, all of which are available on Amazon. In fact, that’s the only place where you can get their products. As far as we know, they do not have their own separate shop, nor do they have their own site.

Don’t let that discourage you too much, though. Sure, they might not be as well-known as some of the other brands out there, but their weighted blankets work just as well. One thing that sets them apart from their competitors is that all their products are eco-friendly and sustainable—that is, their blankets are made from bamboo fiber. Not only does it require no fertilizer, but these plants are capable of regenerating their own roots. In other words, they never need to be replanted. This saves on labor, water, and pesticides!

Pine & River Weighted Blanket Materials

Like we said above, all their weighted blanket are made from bamboo fabric. If anything, that’s their selling point. In contrast, most of the ones that you see in stores are cotton. While cotton is good, it doesn’t quite have the same properties as bamboo.

Benefits of Bamboo vs Cotton:

  • Naturally wicks moisture away from the skin, which keeps you dry and comfortable
  • It’s softer than cotton and less likely to cause skin irritation
  • It’s more durable and will outlast cotton in keeping shape and strength
  • It’s more absorbent and breathable
  • It has anti-microbial properties—aka it’ll stay cleaner than cotton
  • It retains less heat than cotton

Another great thing about the fabric is that it can be machine washed. In fact, it’s so durable, you can also put it on the dryer (on the gentlest setting). With that said, it’s probably best to hang it dry to increase its longevity.

As for the filling, it comes with glass beads. They’re just the right size so that you won’t hear any rattling even if you move the blanket around. Plus, they’re environmentally-friendly too!

Build Quality

The fabric is very soft and cooling, which makes it a great choice for summer months—it actually feels “cool” when it makes contact with your body. For this reason, however, it might not be the best option during the winter. It’s a little slippery than cotton, which means that it might slide off your bed but honestly, it’s not a major issue. It also comes with extra stitching so you don’t have to worry about it unraveling or anything.

Featuring a grid pattern, the weighted blanket stays evenly distributed throughout the night. The small beads are encased on small pockets and are not prone to shifting around or lumping. The blanket’s a little tedious to wash given their size but the fabric itself holds up great. For those of you who want to cut down on the hassle, I’d recommend getting a duvet cover so you can just wash that instead.

Pine & River Pricing and Return Policy

Pine & River offers two different weight options—15 and 20 pounds, both of which are available in blue and grey. Price-wise, they’re not that bad at all, especially when you consider that they’re bigger than the other ones out there (60” x 80”). You’re looking at $69.99 for the smaller one and $90 for the larger one. ~$100 might seem like a lot to spend on something like this, but that’s the general ballpark you’re looking at if you want something on the bigger side. Don’t forget, their products are on Amazon so you’ll also be getting free shipping along with it.

As far as returns go, it is possible to get a refund through Amazon as long as it’s done within 30 days. Keep in mind, however, that it usually takes up to a few nights for you to get used to the weight—so don’t make your decision too fast! If at the end it doesn’t work for you, simply reach out to them via the site and they’ll be happy to offer you your money back.

Pine & River Weighted Blanket Overall Rating

Pine & River is one of the best eco-friendly options available. Let’s face it—there aren’t that many bamboo weighted blankets out there, most of them are made from cotton. Despite that, however, their products are priced competitively. You’re not paying that much extra at all. The filling is also great in that they’re contained in small compartments. In other words, there’s a very low chance that they’ll bunch up during your sleep.

Our Take
Pine & River is different from other brands in that all their weighted blankets are made from bamboo fabric. Not only is it softer than cotton, but it’s also more absorbent and breathable. On top of that, it’s more sustainable. Did we also mention that it has anti-microbial properties? It might feel a little slippery but don’t worry, everything will be cozy once you’re underneath the blanket. Made to last, they even come with extra stitching so the segments won’t come apart with use. Only two size options are available, however, so keep that in mind when you’re doing your shopping. Personally, however, this is one of our favorites out of all of them.
