Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Perhaps it takes you a while to fall asleep? There are a number of things that can cause that. Take stress, for example—it’s one of the major causes of insomnia. Certain habits can have an impact as well. For instance, it’s probably not a good idea to eat a large meal before going to bed. The same goes for coffee. The last thing that you want when you’re trying to sleep is for your body to be pumped full of caffeine!
Fortunately, insomnia is treatable. For one thing, there are medications that you can take that’ll help. Having said that, it’s probably best not to rely on them on a long-term basis. Consider lifestyle changes instead. Instead of drinking coffee late in the afternoon, drink it in the morning. Instead of eating at 6 PM, eat at 7 PM instead so that you’re not hungry when you’re going to bed.
If that doesn’t work, consider using a sleep aid—something like a weighted blanket.
What Are Weighted Blankets?
Weighted blankets are literally, weighted blankets—that is, they’re much heavier than their normal counterparts. Filled with beads, they’re meant to be used as a type of at-home therapy for various conditions from insomnia to anxiety. How do they work? They provide deep pressure touch that helps the body relax. As a result, you’ll be able to have better sleep at night. Given how effective they are, it’s not surprising to know that they’ve become so popular over the past few years.
What’s the science behind these kinds of blankets? Put it simply, they increase serotonin levels in the body. In doing so, it helps to induce sleep. On top of that, it also boosts dopamine production—another chemical in the brain that helps to regulate sleep. That’s not all. The pressure from the blankets also helps to lower cortisol levels aka the body’s stress hormone.
Picking the Right Weighted Blanket For You
Buying a weighted blanket is not as simple as just picking one off the shelf. You have to take into consideration a few things, the most important being the weight. Yes, they come in different weights and yes, it’ll make a difference in terms of effectiveness. How do you determine which is right for you? Calculate 10% of your total body weight—the number that you end up with is the weight that you want for your blanket. For example, if you weigh 120 pounds, you’ll want to find something that’s 12 pounds.
Are Weighted Blankets Right For Everyone?
Weighted blankets come with a number of benefits, there’s no doubt about that. With that said, they’re not suitable for everyone. First and foremost, they should never be used with small children (those who can’t get out of the blanket themselves). Given how heavy they can be, they can cause suffocation.
These blankets should also be avoided by those with certain medical conditions. For instance, it’s not recommended that you use it if you have sleep asthma or asthma. Those with circulation problems should avoid using them as well.
ZZZhen Weighted Blanket Review
ZZZhen is a company that specializes in weighted blankets (they also sell duvet covers). As far as we can tell, though, they don’t have their own site. Instead, they sell exclusively on Amazon. In fact, they’ve become one of the most popular brands on the site. To give you a better idea, they’ve accumulated more than 2,000 positive reviews, as of this post!
One of the great things about the company is that they offer weighted blankets in multiple sizes and weights. In other words, you can pick the one that’s right for you. For example, you’ll probably want to go for the smaller option if you have a smaller bed.
Their weighted blanket is made from 100% cotton. Not only is it soft to the touch, but it’s also breathable. In other words, you won’t have to worry about waking up covered in sweat! Another thing that we like is the fact that it’s odor-resistant. This means that your blanket will remain fresher for longer, even if you use it for long periods of time. Having said that, there will come a time where you’ll have to put it in the washer.
The product listing doesn’t specify what the filling is but as far as we can tell, it’s filled with glass beads. They’re large enough so that you can feel them but small enough so that they don’t bother you at night. If anything, it’s much better than the plastic alternatives that some other brands use. Not only is it better for the environment, but it’s more durable as well.
My only complaint would be that they don’t provide you with a duvet cover (many others come with it). Instead, you have to buy it separately from their shop, which requires extra money. If you choose to get the blanket, though, we’d highly recommend that you get the cover. It’ll protect the cotton so that it won’t get dirty as easily. On top of that, it’ll make it easier to clean (you can just wash the cover instead of having to put the whole blanket into the washing machine).
Note: Despite their size, they can be put in the washing machine. Just make sure that the weight is evenly distributed when you put it in. From there, you can wash on a gentle cycle with cold water. As far as drying goes, you can either air dry it (which can take a bit of time) or you can machine dry on low heat.
There’s nothing negative that sticks out when it comes to build quality. In fact, we’re a big fan of the blanket’s design. Instead of there being a large checkered pattern, ZZZhen’s features a small diamond grid pattern that helps to keep the glass beads in place. Given how small each “pocket” is, the beads will also be less likely to slide around when you’re moving the blanket. This means that you’ll get an even distribution of weight, which will make it more comfortable to use.
As far as the duvet cover goes, it’s also made from natural cotton. Keep in mind, however, that the blanket doesn’t come with any loops or hooks so you won’t be able to tie it on properly. As long as it’s put on correctly, though, it shouldn’t shift around when you’re using it. Now if only they had more than one color to choose from…I mean, grey is nice, but sometimes you want something a little more vibrant.
Pricing and Returns Policy
Their weighted blankets are on the affordable side so it’s a good option if you want to give them a try. Keep in mind, however, that the price will go up as you move up in size. For example, their smallest blanket (48”x72”, 15 pounds) goes for around $40 whereas their 25-pound blanket goes for $68. Honestly, it’s not that big of a jump, considering just how much bigger and heavier the latter is, but I thought I’d just put it out there.
Given that they’re sold on Amazon, you’ll also get free shipping with your order. This makes things so much more convenient—I mean, can you imagine lugging a 15+ pound blanket home?
Want to give the blanket a try but not sure if you’ll keep it or not? No problem. Since it’s sold on Amazon, you’ll get to take advantage of their 30-day return policy. In other words, you can send it back for a refund if you’re not satisfied with how it works. What’s more, is that they also offer a 3-year quality guarantee. In other words, if anything happens to the product within three years, you’ll either get it fixed or replaced! Simply let their customer service team know through the site.
ZZZhen Weighted Blanket Overall Rating
Are their weighted blankets worth the money? We’d say yes. For one thing, the material is nice and soft. If anything, the cotton is just as high-quality as those used by some of the more expensive brands. Sure, they don’t disclose what the filling is but for our purposes, it does the job. It remains evenly distributed and doesn’t have a tendency of shipping around thanks to the small diamond grid pattern. The only negative, really, is the fact that it doesn’t come with a duvet cover. For that, you’ll have to spend another ~$30 or so.
Multiple sizes and weights available
Diamond-like grid pattern keeps beads evenly distributed
Does not come with a duvet cover
Limited color options
ZZZhen offers affordable weighted blankets that are a good option for those who want to test them out. Made from natural cotton, it’s both soft and breathable. What’s more, is that it features a small diamond-like grid, which keeps the glass beads (?) in place. On top of that, it’s machine washable so you can easily wash it if necessary. The only negative is that it does not come with a duvet cover so make sure to buy one separately from their store. Trust me, it's worth the extra $30—after all, it’ll make your blanket last a whole lot longer!
